چکیده

Sumarry. In wheat seedlings (Triticum durum), uptake of potassium and nitrate, transpiration and shoot growth were inhibited by adding cadmium to the nutrient medium. A sharp reduction in cytokinin content was observed within two hours of supplying cadmium. The reduction in cytokinin content was probably a result of hormone breakdown. In support of this, Cd-treatment elevated cytokinin oxidase activity. Similarities between the effects of cadmium on both cytokinin content and transpiration are discussed in terms of an involvement of the hormone in protecting plants from the toxic action of this heavy metal.

The effect of root cooling on hormone content, leaf conductance and root hydraulic conductivity of durum wheat seedlings (Triticum durum L.).

Root cooling of 7-day-old wheat seedlings decreased root hydraulic conductivity causing a gradual loss of relative water content during 45 min (RWC). Subsequently (in 60 min), RWC became partially restored due to a decrease in transpiration linked to lower stomatal conductivity. The decrease in stomatal conductivity cannot be attributed to ABA-induced stomatal closure, since no increase in ABA ...

Characterization of cadmium uptake, translocation and storage in near-isogenic lines of durum wheat that differ in grain cadmium concentration.

Here we examined several physiological properties of two near-isogenic lines of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum) that differ in grain cadmium accumulation, to identify the function of a gene locus that confers differential grain Cd concentrations. Time- and concentration-dependent uptake and translocation studies using 109Cd were conducted on nutrient solution-grown seedlings. Root ex...

Combined toxicity of cadmium and arsenate to wheat seedlings and plant uptake and antioxidative enzyme responses to cadmium and arsenate co-contamination.

To demonstrate the combined toxicity of cadmium (Cd) and arsenate (As) to early developmental stages of six wheat varieties, young seedlings were exposed to solutions containing both contaminants and seed germination frequency and seedling biomass, root length and shoot height, Cd and As uptake, amylase activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), soluble protein and ...

Abscisic acid accumulation and cadmium tolerance in rice seedlings

doi: 10.1111/j.1399-3054.2005.00490.x Rice (Oryza sativa L.) seeds were soaked for 18 h in distilled water in the absence (–PBZ) or presence (þPBZ, a triazole) of 100 mg l 1 paclobutrazol and then air dried. These air-dried seeds were germinated in the dark and then cultivated in a Phytotron. Twelve-day-old –PBZ and þPBZ seedlings were treated or not with CdCl2. Cd toxicity was judged by the de...

Effects of Exogenous Calcium on the Growth and Physiological Traits of Garlic Seedlings under Cadmium Stress

In this study, the alleviation effect of exogenous calcium (Ca) against cadmium (Cd) toxicity to growth, photosynthetic characteristics, antioxidant properties, and absorption of nutrients was explored in nutrient solution-cultured garlic seedlings. The results indicated that Cd significantly inhibited the growth of garlic seedlings as well as reduced the chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic...
